Cedar is becoming the ultimate luxury in wooden furniture because of its wonderful aroma and the feeling of calm and freshness it brings to any room. With its ability to absorb moisture in a humid environment, cedar is invaluable in rooms that are wet and dank and those that are situated next to a bathroom or a leaky pipe. Another advantage of cedar is that it can prevent the invasion of moths into your closet and destroying wool clothing and other valuable items. Your furniture and other items of value will never grow moldy in a cedar closet. Cedar being extremely expensive now, if buying a complete cedar closet is not possible; you can always buy cedar planks to line the closet you already have. This can be done by either gluing the boards or nailing them to the existing boards which will leave ugly marks on the surface. Although this is the only other option you have, you cannot expect this make believe cedar closet to look anything like the real thing which indeed is a thing of beauty. If you cannot resort to any of the above, why not simply buy some cedar hangers or any other accessories to prevent moths from destroying your valuables in the closet. The aroma of the cedar is enough to drive away any harmful insects from laying eggs in the closet.
Although cedar was not considered a high end material sometime back, closets made of cedar soon began to be heralded as a luxury item. Even if you were to think that cedar is not one of life’s necessities, they are indeed a great asset to any home due to its distinctive fresh fragrance and its benefits of repelling mold, mildew and moths. Its rustic appearance too adds a new dimension to a room and getting a cedar closet for your home; if you don’t have one already, can be a desirable addition.
Always use cedar oil to keep your closet refreshed and smelling just like new. Empty the closet of all its valuables and vacuum the interior and all surfaces to clean it. Using a piece rag, wipe the surfaces well and leave it for sometime so that the wood absorbs the oil. Air the closet for sometime and move your belongings back. Never use water to clean cedar as this could damage the wood grain.
If you are already a lucky owner of a cedar closet the easiest way to keep it refreshed is by using cedar oil. First, however, you must remove all clothing from the closet and vacuum the surface well. Then you can use a piece of cloth to apply the cedar oil evenly across the surface or for easy application, purchase a cedar spray. You must allow the oil to soak into the wood before you move your belongings back in to the closet. A very useful temporary fix is to hang cedar sachets or balls in the closet but the effect will wear out soon.
